To Kill a Mocking Bird

When I went back, they were folded across the fence…like they were expectin’ me

This sentence is in reference to when Jem loses his pants on the Radley property and goes back the next day to find them good as new. This freaks Jem out as when he left them there the night before, they were in tatters. Jem thought that someone was reading his mind, but neither of the children ever considered that Boo Radley might have fixed the pants. It doesn’t fit with the sterotype of Boo which the town of Maycomb packs him so tightly into, so Boo never gets the credit he deserves for mending Jems pants.
