'Jem and I were trotting in our orbit'

As mentioned here, the two children had almost an orbit, around their neighbourhood. They did not venture outside this orbit. This orbit remains the same shape and repeats itself continously the children walk the same route everyday, not attempting to explore any further. Their lives are limited to the constraints of thier 'orbit'.
